Bovine Displaced Abomasum

Displaced Abomasum is basically a management problem in dairy animals and many factors contribute to its origin. The underlying cause is the upward positioning of the rumen floor and the migration of the abomasum under it.

One causative factor, among many, is the production of gas by the rumen, thereby floating the rumen off the floor of the body and allowing the abomasum to migrate. Upsets of the rumen digestion at a time prior to and following calving are notorious in producing the syndrome. Sudden changes in diet also contribute to this costly malady.
