Equine Myeloencephalopathy

 (Herpes Virus)

Myeloencephalopathy is an equine herpes virus that causes respiratory disease, abortion, neonatal illness, and neurological disease. The virus can affect just a few horses or the whole barn.

Initial clinical signs of the virus include:

  • Fever
  • Anorexia
  • Nasal Discharge

Herpes myeloencephalopathy progresses to acute onsets of ascending hind limb weakness and incoordination, horses begin to dribble urine, and in some cases, cranial nerve disease with head tilting, blindness, and facial nerve paralysis develops.
